Champions League round-up: Holders Barcelona turned on the style to secure their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a classy 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen in their final Group A match at the Nou Camp tonight.
Needing to beat Werder to avoid becoming the first champions to fall at the group stage, Barca dispelled any doubts about their ability to defend their crown as they put their opponents to the sword inside the first 20 minutes.
Ronaldinho gave Barcelona the lead with an inspired free kick that fooled both the Werder defence and keeper Tim Wiese in the 13th minute.
Iceland striker Eidur Gudjohnsen doubled the home side's lead soon after with a powerful close-range finish when Ludovic Giuly slipped the ball into his path after scorching his way down the right flank.
The win meant that the Catalans leapfrogged Werder into second place in the final standings and will now head into the knockout phase together with group winners Chelsea. Werder go into the Uefa Cup.
Andriy Shevchenko's first Champions League goal for Chelsea helped the English champions finish top of Group A, with a comfortable victory over bottom club Levski Sofia.
Shevchenko fired home in the 27th minute to become the second-highest European goalscorer of all-time.
Substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips made sure of victory with a 20-yard drive in the 83rd minute.
Liverpool were the losers on their return to the Ataturk Stadium, with Galatasaray sealing a 3-2 Champions League win over the Group C winners.
Rafael Benitez's troops, returning to the scene of their famous European final victory over AC Milan, had already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition so fielded youngsters such as Lee Peltier, Danny Guthrie, Daniel Agger and Gabriel Paletta.
Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, the penalty hero in Istanbul two seasons ago, also started but was beaten by Necati Ates, Okan Buruk and Sasa Ilic.
The visitors took the lead on 22 minutes when Craig Bellamy's left-wing cross was turned home by Robbie Fowler's thigh for his 13th European goal for the Reds - and his first in the Champions League proper.
But the lead only lasted a few minutes, with Xabi Alonso's poor backpass going straight to Ates, who gobbled up the chance by coolly sliding the ball past Dudek.
Jamie Carragher went close twice but it was 2-1 to the hosts on 28 minutes when Paletta's headed clearance from a corner fell to Buruk, who volleyed home an unstoppable 25-yard thunderbolt.
Dudek did well to deny Sabri Sarioglu with his legs before the break, but it was all Gala in the second half and after Umit Karan's flicked header hit the post, they got a third when Ilic sidefooted home on 79 minutes.
Liverpool did have the last laugh, though, as Fowler headed home a second goal on 90 minutes and the Reds qualified with 13 points compared to Gala's paltry haul of four.
