Los Angeles Galaxy 2 San Jose Earthquakes 0:Just over 48 hours after arriving on the west coast of America and with just one training session under his belt with his new team-mates, Robbie Keane marked his MLS debut with a goal for his new side in their victory over San Jose at the Home Depot Centre on Saturday night.
The Republic of Ireland striker timed his break perfectly when David Beckham played a ball over the top on 21 minutes and showed a bit of Tallaght trickery to bamboozle San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch and tap home to the net.
Keane had a chance to make it two for Bruce Arena’s side in the second half but blazed his shot over the bar from close range before being replaced after 72 minutes by Mike Magee, who scored the Galaxy’s second
Keane admitted afterwards that he felt no reaction to jetlag and that he could have completed the 90 minutes.
“I didn’t run out of gas,” Keane said. “Bruce just took me off. I wanted to stay on but it was obviously the right decision with the travel and the few days. I felt good considering I’ve only trained once with the lads.
“If you’ve seen me play over the years, I like to play with energy. I’ve always done that. I had a good night’s sleep last night, so I wasn’t really too worried about that. There is certainly a lot more to come from me.”
Former United States boss Arena was delighted with Keane’s performance as his side kept up their six-point lead at the top of the Western Conference.
“We’re elated with Robbie,” Arena said. “I think he had a great 70 minutes for us tonight and we think there are a lot of great games for Robbie in our team.”
Galaxy skipper Landon Donovan backed up his manager’s comments and made special mention of the dummy that led to his goal.
“It was a fantastic finish on the goal,” said Donovan. “He made it look easy it’s not an easy play. He made Jon Busch look foolish and scored the goal. It was a fantastic goal and that’s what we want from him.”
The goal was Beckham’s 11th assist of the season and he believes that the former Tottenham striker will be able to settle much quicker after opening his goal-scoring account so early.
“It was a great night, obviously Robbie playing for the first time,” said Beckham. “It was a good game for him to get off the mark with a goal straight away. It’s always important for a goal scorer to do that.”
The Galaxy play LD Alajuelense in a Concacaf Champions League match at home on Thursday before they travel to New York for a league match against Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bulls next Sunday.
