Darren Randolph A solid and confident performance from Ireland's undoubted number one. Unable to do anything about the two France goals and produced a string of smart saves, including a good stop from Gignac. Rating: 8/10

Stephen Ward Bookended the first half with the cross which led to the penalty and a goal saving block from Payet, but Ireland really struggled down his flank after the break. Rating: 5/10

Shane Duffy Grew into the first half manfully but the start of the second was a catalogue of errors. Inexperience showed as he was sucked in too easily for Griezmann's second then sent off minutes later. Rating: 5/10

Richard Keogh Helped his back four settle after a frantic opening but the second half was a struggle. Had marshalled Giroud well but was easily beaten as striker set up Griezmann's second. Rating: 6/10

Seamus Coleman Managed not to unravel along with the rest of the Irish back four. Didn't have many opportunities to get forward but had his hands full with Payet and then Coman. Rating: 7/10

James McCarthy Started off delivering a second fine performance in his favoured position but faded as the French onslaught came after the break. Definitely thrives without Glenn Whelan but this was always a stiff task. Rating: 6/10

Jeff Hendrick One of the stand out players in Lyon in the first half, and Ireland retained the ball far better when he dropped deep to link the play. Barely saw it in the second half. Rating: 7/10

James McClean Had a quiet first half with much of the action coming down Ireland’s right. Good first time cross nearly saw Murphy double Ireland’s lead before he was sacrificed after Duffy’s red card. Rating: 6/10

Robbie Brady Held his nerve to slot the early penalty but was quiet after that. Was too easily outmuscled at times and didn't have many set-piece opportunities. Rating: 6/10

Daryl Murphy Had Adil Rami struggling for periods and his physicality was married with a few cute touches. Simply didn’t get any service as France took a stranglehold on proceedings. Rating: 6/10

Shane Long Was clever drawing Pogba into the foul for the penalty and his pace had France rattled. Did a good defensive shift tucking in on the right but struggled to assert influence as the tide turned. Rating: 7/10

Subs Jon Walters came on after France had equalised while John O'Shea's arrival was never part of the masterplan. Wes Hoolahan was also thrown on but all three subs were joining a losing cause by the time they were introduced. The Walters shot that flashed just wide was the closest Ireland came in second half. Rating: 5/10

Manager Martin O’Neill has done a good job getting this Ireland side to within 45 minutes of what would have been Ireland’s greatest ever win. He can’t be blamed for the way the back four folded in the second half, while the first half was exceptional. Rating: 7/10
