England manager Roy Hodgson's position is unlikely to come under too much threat and if it does, Redknapp, along with former striker Alan Shearer, wants him to stay.

“He couldn’t have done any more, he prepared the team well and got a good camp,” Redknapp told the BBC.

Shearer added on the same network: "I think he should be given the opportunity to take England to the Euros in two years. We have to see the likes of (Luke) Shaw, (Raheem) Sterling, Ross (Barkley), these guys.

"Everyone wanted to see the kids given a chance and he went and tried to win the game against Italy. . He should be given the chance to finish what he started."

Ex-England midfielder Ray Wilkins reckons there have been improvements since the misery of Euro 2012.

“In times gone by the problem has been we never had possession. We had two thirds last night and we have improved, no doubt,” he told Sky Sports News.

“But defensively we are struggling. When Suarez pulled off Jagielka’s shoulder, Leighton Baines should have got back with him.”

Wilkins also believes Rooney comes in for too much criticism, saying: “I think we’ve been too harsh on the Rooney factor. Wayne is so generous that he’s prepared to play anywhere. If you put him at left-back, he will play there. That’s how he is.”
