Paul McShane says it’s crucial the Republic of Ireland players go into this weekend in a positive frame of mind. The team have been solid at the back in their two build-up games and while they were decidedly low-key affairs, the defender believes there is the basis
to get the win over Scotland that is so urgently needed.
“We’ve got to be confident,” said the 29-year-old, who is disappointed to have been let go by Hull City but still upbeat and about the various options he is considering.
“It’s a massive game, everyone knows it’s a huge game. But we’ve had a good week’s training; now all we can do is make sure we’re ready but I think people will be firing on all cylinders alright.”
The preparation games, he says, are important in that they’ve added to the group’s collective confidence.
“It’s good that we’ve kept clean sheets against Northern Ireland and England. We’ve turned in a couple of decent defensive displays, now we just need that goal because goals change games. We just need to get that goal.”
Asked about the performance of his Hull team-mate, Robbie Brady on Sunday, McShane was enthusiastic.
“I thought he was brilliant. He has been left wing -back for Hull and I have been the left-sided centre-half so we have a good understanding. It’s great playing alongside him. He’s a powerful fella, he’s done really well . . ”
