Midfielder, Magnúsdóttir went close on 15 minutes when her header struck the post but the hosts were ahead nine minutes later when Lárusdóttir capitalised on a poor clearance and looped a shot into the net from the edge of the box.

Though there was little from Ireland before the break they emerged confident in the second half and veteran substitute Olivia O'Toole set up Mary Therese McDonnell in the box but the danger was cleared by the Icelandic goalkeeper.

Byrne was again on hand to keep Ireland in the game as they pressed at the other end but she could do little about the hosts' second when Lárusdóttir crossed from the right and striker, Vidarsdóttir headed home from close range.

Qualification was sealed in the 69th minute when Lárusdóttir grabbed her second, running on to a throughball, beating defender Meabh de Burcha and firing past Byrne.
