The Republic of Ireland will face Brazil next March, FAI chief executive John Delaney has confirmed, although a venue for the glamour friendly has yet to be decided.
Speaking at last night’s RTE sports awards, where Brian O’Driscoll was named Sports Person of the Year, Delaney said that the match could be played in England.
With the match not certain to be played at Croke Park, both Old Trafford and the Emirates stadium have been mooted as possible venues.
Brazil last visited Ireland in February 2008, when Robinho’s neatly finished goal in front of 70,000 fans saw the visitors win 1-0 at GAA headquarters.
Meanwhile, as the row over Thierry Henry’s handball against Ireland rumbles on, Delaney revealed that Fifa had offered the FAI a fair play award.
“Tomorrow night there is an awards ceremony and they have offered us a Fair Play award,” he added. “We've respectfully declined.'
