Having apparently saved Steve Staunton's job last night, Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland will return to England today and open contracts talks with his employers Manchester City.
The 20-year-old spared Staunton's blushes at the Serravalle Stadium when scoring deep in injury-time to hand a misfiring Republic of Ireland a 2-1 European qualifying win over part-timers San Marino.
Despite netting his second international goal in just his third appearance, Ireland will want to forget the sorry manner in which the team achieved the three points and instead focus on his club football.
He has caught the eye at club level with a string of impressive performances this season and, indeed, has become the creative force in a side that badly lacks penetration.
Despite still having 18 months to run on his current deal, manager Stuart Pearce is eager to secure the Cobhman's services on a long-term basis.
"I spoke with Stephen three weeks ago and offered him a new contract even though he has a lengthy one already," Pearce said today.
"It is a credit to what he has done this season that we feel it is the right time to talk to him. In situations like this, the ball is always in the player's court. If he is doing well, he will get rewarded."
Providing Ireland returns fully fit from San Marino, he will be in the Manchester City side to face Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday.
