Everton 1 Chelsea 1: FA Cup holders Chelsea earned a 1-1 draw and a fourth-round replay with Everton after substitute Salomon Kalou came to their rescue at Goodison Park. Louis Saha headed the Toffees in front just after the hour mark, but Kalou's precise finish 15 minutes from time earned Chelsea a replay in a hard-fought encounter.
Everton were rewarded for a good spell of pressure when Saha got behind John Terry and rose highest to powerfully head home a Leighton Baines corner in the 62nd minute.
The visitors hung in there though and Ireland's Seamus Coleman was denied from close range by a combination of Terry and Michael Essien before Chelsea were level.
After a quick counter-attack, Nicolas Anelka was fortunate to find Kalou bursting into the right handside of the box before the Ivorian found the bottom corner with a slick finish.
"We had all the play and possession and we are disappointed," Everton captain Phil Neville told ESPN. "We have played well against the top teams but we have to produce that sort of performance in the replay because that will be a very tough test.
“The manager (David Moyes) wanted more energy, to play at our tempo and get the ball forward with Saha up front. He caused them a lot of problems and we are really disappointed to concede that goal. But a couple of years ago (when Everton went on to reach the final) we beat Liverpool in a replay and we have to do it again.”
Moyes felt Essien’s brilliant block as Coleman looked set to fire home was the key moment of the game.
“When you get the chance at home you want to take it,” he said. “We limited them to few opportunities and the turning point was the Coleman header and the last-ditch tackle that kept them in the game. Their goal was against the run of play, we had control in the second half and I thought the boys played well today.
“I thought we had more chances in the second half, we were well organised and I didn’t think we would concede a goal.”
