Soccer:Los Angeles Galaxy have confirmed Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane has signed a "multi-year contract extension" with the Major League Soccer club. The 32-year-old Dubliner, who moved to California from Tottenham in August 2011 and has since helped the Galaxy win consecutive MLS Cup titles, revealed as much two weeks ago.
A statement on www.lagalaxy.com read: “The LA Galaxy announced today that the club has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with forward Robbie Keane. The Galaxy MVP in 2012, Keane led the team with 16 goals in 28 regular-season games while adding nine assists. In the post-season, Keane led MLS in goals with six as he led the Galaxy to their second consecutive MLS Cup championship. Per club and league policy, details of the contract were not released.”
Just how long the deal will keep him at the club, is not exactly clear, given the secrecy with which Galaxy treat these matters. Keane had a year left on his existing deal and said a fortnight ago that he signed a two-year contract.
“It’s been a long season with the Euros and what have you so I’ve a few little niggles that need to be sorted out, so I don’t think at this moment in time it would be right for me to go anywhere,” he said. “I had another year left and they offered me a new contract at the end of last season so I’ve just signed a new two-year contract two days ago.”
What is clear is that it is a lucrative deal for the Tallaght man that will keep him in LA until at least 2014, and perhaps 2015. Keane has scored 18 goals in 32 regular-season games since arriving in America, adding seven goals in 10 post-season games. He was named in the MLS Best XI for the first time in 2012.
Keane is training with Spurs for the next two weeks in a bid to maintain his fitness ahead of the start of the new MLS season in March.
