Stephen Kenny has been unveiled as the new Derry City boss as the Dubliner returns to the Brandywell on a three-year deal after he left the eircom League club last December to take over at Scottish club Dunfermline.

Kenny's return was confirmed at today's press conference at the Delacroix venue in Derry where he was received by rapturous applause from hundreds of fans in the packed room.

"It was a big decision to leave Scotland but I am grateful for the opportunity," said Kenny at today's announcement. "If we are going to be successful, Derry will have to be the hardest working team in the league."

Before and during the festive period there had been much speculation linking Kenny with a return to Derry where he enjoyed much success with the Candystripes first time around.

Kenny managed Derry from August 2004 until December 2006, during which time he steered the club to FAI Cup and two League Cups, while running close in the league to finish runner-up in 2005 and 2006. Derry also advanced through two Champions League rounds under his stewardship.

He took over as Dunfermline boss this time last year, but was recently sacked by the Scottish club. He  replaces John Robertson after the Scot had his contract terminated by Derry earlier this month. Assistant boss Tony Gorman left the club this week.

On the domestic scene Kenny began his managerial career at Longford Town in 1999 when he steered the midlands club to promotion to the Premier Division in his first season. He went on to win the league with Bohemians in 2003, but was sacked by the Dublin club the following year.

His return to Derry is widely seen as a popular choice for the Derry faithful.
