Soccer: Shamrock Rovers insist they are some way off appointing Michael O'Neill's successor, despite Derry City manager Stephen Kenny being strongly linked with the job.
Kenny is believed to be in talks with the club after O’Neill failed to agree terms on a new contract and ended his tenure last week, following Rovers’ final Europa League group game against Tottenham.
A Rovers spokesman today confirmed the search for a new man has begun, but insisted the process is still in its infancy.
“There’s always going to be speculation,” he said, adding: “We had a board meeting on Monday night and there’s a lot of interest in the job, but we are nowhere near confirming anything.”
Former Bohemians manager Kenny reportedly “confirmed” to the BBC today that he is in discussion with Rovers, while it is believed he has already sounded at a number of players about a move to Dublin.
The 40-year-old Tallaght native, who was considered for the job prior to the appointment of back-to-back league winner O’Neill three years ago, would appear a prime candidate for the job, having enjoyed success with both Bohs and Derry.
There is also believed to be "interest" in the job from England, while former Ireland internationals Jason McAteer, Alan Kernaghan and David Kelly have also been linked with the position.
