Vincent Kompany has signed a new five-year contract at Manchester City worth in excess of £31 million, with the captain targeting five titles before he leaves the club.

Kompany, at 28, has already led City to two Premier League crowns and, if he sees out this contract, the Belgian central defender would have been at the club 11 years. The fresh terms are thought to be worth about £120,000 a week with considerable add-ons.

Kompany, who has also won the FA Cup and League Cup at City, said: “To be honest I didn’t have to think twice about it. It’s just about continuity for me – I’ve always wanted to stay at this club for a long time. Looking to the future I can see the potential. To be part of the history we’ve built together. It’s just a natural thing for me to stay longer here and win more trophies.

“I’m not happy with one or two. I want more. I want to be able to look back in my career and say that I won four or five at City. It’s a tough ask, particularly when you know how difficult the league is. But it’s something I’m ready to fight for every day. I’ve always said this is just the start. We are looking to be one of the big clubs in Europe.” Guardian Service
