Aston Villa will have to wait until tomorrow to confirm the signing of Richard Dunne from Manchester City. Despite submitting the required documents well ahead of the 5pm transfer deadline, the workload undertaken at Premier League headquarters means it is taking some time to verify all the paperwork.
A similar situation arose in the winter transfer window when Andrei Arshavin’s move from Zenit St Petersburg was not officially confirmed until 24 hours after the deadline.
Dunne passed a medical and settled personal terms after the two clubs agreed a fee at the weekend, but Villa’s hopes of a swift conclusion were held up by an issue over the pay-off the player, who had three years remaining on his existing contract, was looking for from City.
He would be entitled to a testimonial at Eastlands next summer on completing 10 years with the club.
Elsewhere, Darren O'Dea is heading for Reading on loan after signing a three-year extension with Celtic.
See below for all the transfer activity on deadline day.
Arsenal
Nothing to report at the Emirates where the news of Eduardo's two-match ban for diving was the most pressing matter on deadline day.
Aston Villa
Martin O’Neill is expected to complete the signing of Republic of Ireland international Richard Dunne for €6.8m later this evening and has also bolstered his defence further with the €5.7million capture of James Collins from West Ham.
Portsmouth are reportedly still keen to bring left-back Nicky Shorey to Fratton Park on loan.
Birmingham City
A left-back was also on Alex McLeish’s list with Tottenham’s Wales international Gareth Bale and former Arsenal defender Armand Traore linked. Nothing came of those moves but Sunderland midfielder Teemu Tainio is on board until the end of the season.
Blackburn Rovers
Benni McCarthy appears to be staying put despite talk of a move to Hull. Sam Allardyce had been linked with Manchester City striker Mwaruwari Benjani but no move materialised.
Bolton Wanderers
Nantes hitman Ivan Klasnic had been mooted, along with Fulham’s Diomansy Kamara on loan, though the Cottagers stayed quiet on deadline day.
Burnley
Hull City’s Daniel Cousin was the name being mentioned around Turf Moor but the only additions to Owen Coyle's squad were David Nugent in a loan deal from Portsmouth on loan and the 17-year-old Livingston striker Joe McKee.
Nugent endured a difficult time at Fratton Park since his €6.7 million move in July 2007 but if the 25-year-old is successful at Turf Moor he could make his move permanent.
Chelsea
Not much on the radar for Carlo Ancelotti, predictably.
Everton
Everton finalised the strengthening of their defence with the signing of Atletico Madrid’s Johnny Heitinga for €6.7 million just minutes before the summer transfer window closed at 5pm.
The Holland international, whose fee could eventually rise to over €8 million, has signed a five-year deal.
Fulham
A quiet day at Craven Cottage closed with the news that Roy Hodgson had signed striker David Elm from Swedish side Kalmar on a one-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Hull City
Hull have a few bob after yesterday’s Sunderland move (initially around €9m) for defender Michael Turner but were reluctant to splash the cash on deadline day. Stoke defender Ibrahima Sonko did join on a season-long loan.
Liverpool
No cash for Rafa means no edge of the seat signing for Liverpool.
Manchester City
Club captain Richard Dunne looks to be on his way to Aston Villa but there was no move for Spurs' winger David Bentley . The England midfielder was believed to have been in Manchester discussing a deal with Martin Petrov due to head the other way.
Tal Ben Haim is also on his way out of the club having signed for Portsmouth.
Manchester United
Alex Ferguson reckons he has enough to retain the title.
Portsmouth
It was a busy day on the Solent with Niko Krancjar jumping ship to join Harry Redknapp at Spurs for €3m.
Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim has signed a four-year-deal from Man City, subject to a work permit, while midfielder Hassan Yebda, 25, moves from Benfica on a season-long loan.
In a last-minute deal Portsmouth also clinched the signing of 25-year-old Watford centre-back Mike Williamson on a four-year deal.
Stoke City
Stoke announced the signing of Uruguay international Diego Arismendi on a four-year contract and have also bagged Sunderland defender Danny Collins for €3million.
Midfielder Arismendi has joined from Club Nacional for an initial fee of €3million which could rise to €5.5million.
The pair follow former Middlesbrough duo Robert Huth and Tuncay Sanli in heading to the Britannia Stadium. Ibrahima Sonko has left the club to go on loan at Hull.
Sunderland
Ipswich manager Roy Keane nabbed Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards from his old club. The midfield pair were made available for transfer by Black Cats boss Steve Bruce after he strengthened his midfield over the summer with the acquisitions of Lorik Cana and Lee Cattermole.
Tottenham Hotspur
Harry Redknapp has been reunited with Niko Krancjar after the Croatian completed a €3m deal. In a very late deal the club confirmed they had reached an agreement with Pompey for the transfer of the midfielder.
Rumours of a swap deal involving Alan Hutton for Sunderland's Anton Ferdinand came to nothing, as did the talk of David Bentley moving to Manchester City .
West Ham United
West Ham let James Collins go to Aston Villa for €5.7m, while last night they sent €10.5m forward Savio Nsereko packing to Fiorentina in a move that saw defender Manuel Da Costa come the other way.
Wigan Athletic
Wigan have been frustrated in a move for Ferrie Bodde, with Swansea rejecting their latest offer.
Ben Watson will go on a six-month loan spell with QPR.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Big Mick was busy yesterday, signing 6ft 7in Austria striker Stefan Maierhofer from Rapid Vienna on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old became the second signing of the day following the arrival of Ecuador midfielder Segundo Castillo on a season-long loan from Red Star Belgrade.
Old Firm movement?
Celtic
Irish defender Darren O'Dea has signed a new three-year deal with Celtic but is set to move to Reading on a season-long loan.
Rangers
Rangers have completed the signing of Jerome Rothen from Paris St Germain on a one-year loan deal. The 31-year-old left winger has become the Scottish champions’ first signing for more than a year.
Ibrox boss Walter Smith had identified the left side of midfield as a problem and Rothen — capped 13 times by France — has been earmarked to fill that void.
Regarded as a dead-ball specialist, the player was a star of Monaco’s run to the 2004 Champions League final, his performances earning him a move that summer to PSG.
