Arsene Wenger insists he would "prefer" Jens Lehmann to stay at Arsenal, but admits it is ultimately the player's decision. And the Frenchman says he does not expect to boost his squad during the January transfer window.
Borussia Dortmund have suggested they may be about to make a move for the out-of-favour Lehmann and, with the German goalkeeper having repeatedly expressed his frustration at being out of the first team, his departure looks increasingly likely.
However, Wenger insists the player could still have a future with Arsenal.
"We'll see together," he told Sky Sports News. "I believe first he has to make his mind up: does he want to stay with us or not? I personally would prefer him to stay and he has to make his mind up first and then we will see together."
Arsenal will lose both Emmanuel Eboue and Kolo Toure on January 7th - the day after their FA Cup clash away at Burnley - when they join the Ivory Coast squad for the African Cup of Nations.
But, asked whether that will force him to enter the market, Wenger replied: "No, not really.
"We knew (about) that before the season started and we expected (Emmanuel) Adebayor to leave, so the good news is that Adebayor doesn't go. But we are not in the market at the moment."
Cesc Fabregas' agent also quashed rumours the influential midfielder is ready to quit Arsenal and move to Real Madrid.
The Spaniard has starred in the Gunners' impressive start to the season and has been a long-term target of the Primera Liga champions.
Real president Ramon Calderon has let his admiration of Fabregas be known and suggested the Gunners star would be keen on a move to the Bernabeu.
In an interview on Spanish television on St Stephen's Day, Calderon said: "Cesc would look very favourably at the chance to wear the Real Madrid shirt. We will see what happens."
However Fabregas signed an extended eight-year contract at Emirates Stadium 12 months ago and his agent Joseba Diaz insists the 20-year-old is not about to break his agreement.
"Cesc has a message for the fans," Diaz told The Sun. "He's very happy at Arsenal and loves (manager) Arsene Wenger. There is no chance he would move. He is absolutely committed to the club.
"All he thinks about is helping them win the Premier League title and the Champions League."
Meanwhile, Wenger has confirmed that there are no fresh injury concerns following the 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.
William Gallas had to leave the pitch temporarily following a challenge from Niko Kranjcar, but has made a full recovery.
"Gallas is all right," he said. "We didn't lose anybody from the Portsmouth game."
However, Robin van Persie remains sidelined and Wenger does not know when he will be back in action.
"Van Persie is still injured. He will not be in contention for the Everton game."
