Clubs in Limerick are being invited to submit applications to the FAI to play 'League of Ireland' football next season following Limerick FC's failure to achieve a licence.

Limerick FC were the only league club denied a licence by the FAI's First Instance Committee, with uncertainty over their future at Hogan Park said to have been a key factor in the decision.

A subsequent appeal against that ruling was rejected.

"In light of today's decision, we would welcome other applications for a licence from the Limerick area," FAI chief executive John Delaney said.

"We want a healthy Limerick based club in the new eircom League of Ireland and if interested entities seek a licence, we would assess them carefully for their suitability to meet the criteria required to play in the League."

Limerick FC officials were told 11 days ago their club would not be granted a First Division licence.

They subsequently appealed that decision and met with the FAI Licensing Appeals Board in Dublin on Wednesday only to be told that appeal had failed.

Limerick FC received official confirmation of the decision by registered post this morning.

Delaney said it was "disappointing" that a club failed to attain a licence but he stressed all applying clubs were required to meet minimum standards.

Limerick FC officials have yet to comment on the matter today and, indeed, also outline what plans - if any - they have to try secure football for the city next season.
