Liverpool 0 Barcelona 1 (2-2):Liverpool reached the Champions League quarter-finals as Barcelona lost their European crown on a thrilling night at Anfield.

The holders threw everything they could muster at Liverpool's defiant ranks, under siege for much of the second period, and even a goal from Eidur Gudjohnsen with 15 minutes left could not break the resolve of the hosts.

Liverpool's 2-1 victory Liverpool achieved in the first leg a fortnight ago was too much for Barcelona, who were unable to become the first side in 11 years to lose a home first leg and still win a Champions League tie.

The club's new owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, on their first visit to Anfield since their takeover, witnessed some resolute and committed displays from the outstanding Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Steve Finnan.

Manager Rafael Benitez went for what he knew had worked so well in the Nou Camp, naming the same starting XI which had achieved the 2-1 win in Catalonia a fortnight ago.

Barcelona, bristling with intent, were much changed with experienced defender Lilian Thuram recalled and the predatory Samuel Eto'o returning.

And they walked out into a deafening arena with the Kop was in full flow.

Hicks and Gillett may know all about Superbowls and Stanley Cups, but they will never have experienced anything like this, a ferocity and passion rarely experienced anywhere in the world.

Barca started with Ronaldinho through the middle but he came up against Carragher, who hurled himself into every challenge, and soon the Brazilian was switched with left-winger Eto'o.

Both Alvaro Arbeloa and Mohamed Sissoko were booked within 20 minutes and one thunderous challenge by Carragher on Deco will have certainly shaken the playmaker.

Barca were always likely to together one of those fizzing, slick passing moves that tear teams apart but it was Liverpool who should have been ahead at the break.

After eight minutes John Arne Riise crashed one 20-yard shot inches wide before he rattled the crossbar from similar range two minutes later.

Bellamy, Dirk Kuyt and then Riise all contrived to miss in a frantic incident. Bellamy's first effort was blocked at the near post by Victor Valdes, with the keeper managing to get in the way of Kuyt's follow-up before Carles Puyol cleared from Riise's follow-up header.

Barcelona had retained much of the possession but Liverpool should still have been ahead.

Thuram was booked for a foul on Kuyt before Sissoko launched a first-time effort from long range after a poor Valdes clearance and the stranded goalkeeper could only watch in relief as the effort bounced on the crossbar and over.
