Danish international defender Daniel Agger has arrived in Liverpool to complete a £5.8m transfer from Brondby.
The 21-year-old centreback, Rafael Benitez's first choice to deputise for Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher, pulled out of a club trip to Gran Canaria to jet into Liverpool and complete the deal, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Brondby were hoping to secure closer to £7m for the player but a compromise appears to have been reached and the youngster is expected sign after a medical.
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry flew out to Denmark earlier in the week to talk to the player and the club, but reports this morning suggested his efforts may have been wasted, with Spurs apparently entering the race.
It appears, however, that yesterday's claim by Benitez that he had enquired with Deportivo la Coruna about the availability of their defenders Fabricio Coloccini and Cesar, may have convinced the Brondby to reduce their demands.
Agger will become Liverpool's second senior signing of the January transfer window after the arrival of Dutch wing-back Jan Kromkamp from Villareal in a swap deal that saw Josemi go in the opposite direction.
