Longford Town have been deducted six points for failing to meet criteria outlined by the FAI club licensing committee earlier this year.

The club was already fined €6,000 on May 1st for not producing the relevant information despite receiving an extension on the initial deadline of March 31st.

A number of clubs were given until May 1st to comply and Longford were the only to club who failed to.

The deduction will leave Longford, who have won one and drawn three this season, with no points after 10 games played.  The club has five working days to appeal the decision.

"The club were on notice that they were facing the possibility of further sanctions," noted Fran Gavin, eircom League of Ireland director. "They were one of several clubs that were given an extension by the First Instance Licensing Committee to meet their licensing obligations and they were the only club that failed to present the necessary documentation.

"Longford can have no complaints because they were given every opportunity to get their house in order.

"The purpose of club licensing is to ensure that clubs are managed and run properly and clubs should know by this stage that if they don't fulfill the criteria that they have signed up to then they face the possibility of fines, points deductions or even the withdrawal of their licence.

"I believe that football in Limerick is now in a much healthier state as a result of the licensing process, while Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers are both much better run clubs after going through a similar process," added Gavin.
