Bayern Munich took a firm grip on Champions League Group A with a 3-2 win over Napoli at the Allianz arena in Munich thanks principally to three goals from striker Mario Gomez.

Gomez’s hat-trick meant he becomes the leading German scorer in the Champions League and also the first to bag two trebles in the competition. He’s now smashed home 19 goals in his last 17 games for Bayern.

Fernandez pulled one back for the Italian side and then made it uncomfortable for the home supporters when he scored a second on 79 minutes. The defeat means that Napoli now find themselves in a straight fight for the runners-up place with Man City, who won in Spain. The Italian side host City on the next round of fixtures.

Inter Milan extended their lead at the top of Group B with a 2-1 victory over Lille, Walter Samuel scoring the first goal. Trabzonspor and CSKA Moscow played out a goalless draw to leave the Russian side ahead on goal difference.

In Manchester United’s Group C Benfica scored first but could only manage a 1-1 against Basel, Huggel’s goal earning the Swiss side a point in Portugal.
