Newcastle's Uefa Cup dreams were torn to shreds as Scott Parker saw a late 'winner' disallowed as they lost 2-0 to AZ Alkmaar on the night to go out on away goals.
The Magpies skipper thought he had put the visitors 5-4 ahead on aggregate with three minutes remaining, only for referee Bertrand Layec to blow for a foul in the build-up.
And it was an ultimately frustrating night for Newcastle as they went out with barely a whimper.
Despite a fairly bright start from the Magpies it was the home side who took an early lead in the 14th minute.
Barely 30 seconds after Shay Given had produced a fine save to deny Julian Jenner, AZ broke down the right and Danny Koevermans' cross was swept home from close range by veteran Georgian striker Shota Arveladze.
Glenn Roeder's men almost produced an immediate response but Scott Parker's drive flew just over the bar.
The visitors managed to see out the remainder of the half without conceding again despite a couple of close shaves.
Kieron Dyer then missed a terrific opportunity to draw the Magpies level in the 54th minute when he dragged his shot across goal, and the visitors were made to pay for that miss two minutes later as AZ levelled the aggregate scores when Koevermans headed home from a Maarten Martens corner.
Parker shot straight at Boy Waterman from a tight angle as Newcastle looked to restore their aggregate lead, while at the other end Jenner forced Given into action.
Steven Taylor and Paul Huntington both produced goalline clearances as the visitors were cut open time and time again by an impressive AZ foward line.
Waterman then produced a good block to deny Obafemi Martins and Parker had his effort chalked off for a foul by Dyer in the build-up, while Arveladze fired against the crossbar for AZ in a frantic finish.
