Uefa Cup: Stephen Ireland Benjani Mwaruwari scored a goal in each half to give Manchester City a 2-0 Uefa Cup victory at Schalke while Tottenham also took a huge stride towards the knockout stages of thanks to a 1-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen.

Benjani opened the scoring for City in the 32nd minute when he fired home a cross from Daniel Sturridge before Ireland put the issue beyond doubt in the 67th minute.

The result lifted City, who were playing without injured striker Robinho, to the top of Group A and gave them a real chance of reaching the next round
