Republic of Ireland football consultant Bobby Robson believes a group of leading managers should have been asked to identify the next English coach as the FA are not qualified to select the right candidate.

Robson - a former England boss - insists a team including himself, Arsene Wenger, Alex Ferguson and Graham Taylor would have the experience and knowledge to select the best man to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson.

"Why do the FA never use the expertise that is already in the league?" he told BBC Radio Five.

"I don't know who the selection committee are but do they know as much as a panel including Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson, myself and Graham Taylor?

"People like this would have come up with an answer. They would have given correct, inside information. It certainly wouldn't have taken three months to tell you who it should be.

"They're nice people at the FA and their love of the game is without doubt. But do they know as much about appointing an England manager as the people who are in the game who fight every Saturday afternoon for a result? They'll give you the best advice.

"In these terms the FA aren't qualified to pick the coach. The FA are the best employers you could work for. I found that out in eight years. They're very steadfast people.

"But they need help technically. In terms of administration they're fine, but they're not as good as what is in the game already."

The FA are continuing their search for Eriksson's successor after Brazilian World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari turned down the job on Friday.

Once again Steve McClaren is the favourite but Martin O'Neil, Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley are also in the frame with Robson imploring the FA to choose an Englishman

"I was amazed at what has happened with Scolari. I didn't know he was in the frame. It came out of the blue that he had been invited," he said.

"I was disappointed in many ways because I wanted us to go English. They were looking for the best man available and I suppose him being a World Cup winner there aren't many better around.

"But I would still have preferred if they had taken someone who is English. There are some English candidates who are doing well and I would have gone for one of those. They wouldn't have refused."

Robson raised an eyebrow at Scolari's claims the pressure that accompanies the England job compelled him to decline the FA's offer.

"I'm astounded that Scolari is using pressure as a reason not to take the job," he said. "You can't tell me that the pressure from the English press is greater than from the Brazilian press.

"I've been in Brazil with England and I saw the amount of media attention that surrounds their coach. We know the English press are searching but you have to keep your head below the parapet and don't worry about it so much."  PA
