Fahey's deal is understood to be around €600,000 with €350,000 up front and the rest depending on appearances.

The Dubliner is highly regarded for his free kicks and corners as well as his creativity in the centre of midfield.

During his time at Villa he only made one appearance, which came in the Intertoto Cup against Lille, before he moved back to Ireland.

On his return he played for Drogheda plus had two stints with St Pat's who finished runners-up to league winners Bohemians this season after John McDonnell's side fell away but Fahey was the stand-out player.

Fahey would join Birmingham in a similar situation as the Blues seek promotion to the Premier League and are currently second to Championship leaders Wolves.

The player has made no secret of his desire to test himself again in England and a spell with a well established club with Premier League ambitions will afford him the chance to do that.
