Barcelona 5 Granada 3:Lionel Messi scored his sixth hat-trick of the season to raise the bar again at Barcelona by equalling and then surpassing the club's goalscoring record set in the 1940s and 50s by Cesar Rodriguez.
The 24-year-old equalled Rodriguez’s tally of 232 official goals when he slotted home Isaac Cuenca's cross in the 17th minute and the Argentina international secured the record outright in the 68th minute when he lobbed the ball over Granada goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
His third and 54th of the season, a new record in itself, came five minutes from the end when he latched on to an Alves throughball, rounded Cesar and poked the ball high into the net.
The victims were Granada, who themselves scored three and briefly threatened an upset when coming from two down with goals from Diego Mainz and Guilherme Siqueira cancelling out Xavi's fourth minute opener and Messi's first.
But more Messi magic, plus a goal for Cristian Tello took Barca 5-2 up before Granada netted a late consolation, Siqueira slotting in his second penalty of the night after Dani Alves had been sent off.
The win takes Barca within five points of leaders Real Madrid, who face a potentially-tricky trip to Villarreal on Wednesday.
In the day's other Primera Division game, Getafe withstood a late aerial bombardment from Osasuna to hold on and claim a point from a goalless game lacking in quality at the Reyno de Navarra.
Raul Garcia and Nino wasted good opportunities for the hosts in the first half, while the closest Getafe came to breaking the deadlock before the break was a Cata Diaz flicked header that drifted just wide.
In the second half, visiting keeper Miguel Angel Moya was twice called into action to keep the scores level as he first smothered Nino's effort from a narrow angle before palming away a fierce shot from Garcia with two minutes remaining.
Osasuna knew they could move into fourth overnight with a victory but in the end had to settle for climbing up to sixth.
