Athlone Town 3 Limerick 0
Athlone Town are now within just three points of climbing off the bottom of the Airtricity League table after they recorded their third home win in four games at the expense of Limerick FC last night.
The hosts were by far the more clinical side in the first half, converting three of their four goal chances. Derek Prendergast directed a powerful header towards goal after four minutes that got a touch off Philip Gorman en route to the Limerick net and Kealan Dillon delivered the second 15 minutes later when he darted in between the centre backs and headed Seán Byrne’s cross to the net.
Gorman tapped in the third shortly before half time but Limerick had plenty of opportunities of their own.
Robbie Williams had a header from eight yards out parried by Paul Skinner and even when Rory Gaffney found a way past the Athlone custodian, Prendergast was on hand to clear the ball off the line.
