Jason Byrne proves a class apart

Bray advance thanks to showing from former international

Jason Byrne proved to be the difference as Bray Wanderers bested Mervue United in the FAI Ford Cup. The veteran netted a brace in a seven-minute spell in the first half to decide a contest devoid of quality or spectators.

Approximately 100 souls were present to see the former Republic of Ireland man fire Pat Devlin's side ahead in the 18th minute. Dean Zambra curled a free kick towards the near post and Byrne planted a header past Conor Gleeson. Six minutes later Ismahil Akinade closed down Gleeson and the shot-stopper panicked and fouled Akinade as he attempted his clearance. Byrne tucked away the resultant spot kick.
