Mulroy’s winner helps Bray complete the double over Shels

Seagulls end run of seven straight defeats to move off foot of table

Shelbourne 1 Bray Wanderers 2: John Mulroy finally gave Bray their win second of the season as they did the double over a sorry Shelbourne side who failed to build on Friday's first win of the campaign. Bray's deserved win ended a run of seven straight defeats and lifts them off the foot of the table.

Both sides wasted early chances. After just 90 seconds Shels’ Mark Leech was clean through one-on-one with goalkeeper Darren Quigley who saved well with his feet.

Three minutes later Bray’s Jason Byrne got free behind the square Shelbourne defence, succeeding only to toe his effort fractionally wide.

Negligent Shelbourne defending didn’t escape a second time on 19 minutes, though, as Bray took the lead.

Gary Dempsey threaded a ball through for the pace of Marty Waters who made no mistake, holding off Brian Shortall to shoot past the advancing Ger Hanley.

Shels continued to struggle and only a superb reaction save from Hanley, in tipping over from Ismahil Akinade, prevented Bray doubling their lead on 52 minutes.

Three minutes later, though, Shelbourne were level. Shane O’Connor’s attempted clearance fell for Leech who scored with a well-placed looping header over Quigley. But Akinade had made a difference and his crossfield ball fed Mulroy on the right on 75 minutes and he cut inside to drill home the winner. In stoppage time Leech’s overhead kick was superbly tipped over by Bray goalkeeper Quigley.
