Michael Schlingermann’s second half penalty save earned Sligo Rovers their first clean sheet this season, and a valuable point at home to Cork City.

The Mayo native dived low to his left to block Sean Maguire’s 55th minute effort, much to his own relief after his careless tip on Karl Sheppard had presented in-form Maguire with the chance to net his sixth goal of the season.

Instead, Schlingermann crowned a fine performance and earned his side a fully deserved point.

The home side probably had the best of the chances overall, with Jaanai Gordon testing Mark McNulty from close range in the first half, and Jimmy Keohane seeing a goal-bound shot blocked in the opening seconds of the second period.

Kieran Sadlier also forced a fine save from McNulty with a stylish effort from a tight angle, while hisprecise cross gave Liam Martin a wonderful chance to win it on 78 minutes, but the Donegal man’s effort flashed wide of the post.

At the other end, it took a brilliant last-ditch sliding challenge by full-back Regan Donelon to deny Sheppard from a great chance after he was picked out by Gearoid Morrissey’s superb ball behind the defence.
