RB Salzburg 1 Bohemians 1:Bohemians manager Pat Fenlon had a feeling Joseph Ndo could play a significant role for his side against Red Bull Salzburg in the first leg of their Champions League second round qualifier in Austria this evening - and he was right.
With the score at 1-0 after an hour, Ndo gleefully tapped home into an unguarded net for a priceless away goal that leaves the League of Ireland champions in a promising position ahead of the return leg in Dalymount Park next week.
It was the only sight of goal Bohs had, in truth, but the Austrian champions hardly put them to sword either, though Brian Murphy’s penalty save from Mark Janko two minutes prior to the equaliser was a massive moment for Fenlon’s men.
Salzburg took the lead in the 25th minute when a deep corner found Dudic unmarked at the back post and the defender made no mistake with the header.
The homeside went in search of a second but found the excellent Murphy in fine form between the posts.
After the break Janko was twice denied before being taken down by Ken Oman and seeing his penalty saved.
Killian Brennan’s ball two minutes later drew the goalkeeper towards Byrne at the back post but he couldn’t block the forward’s header across goal and Ndo equalised from two yards out.
Salzburg responded predictably and pinned Bohs back in their half, but the Gypsies were disciplined in defence.
They got that little bit of luck, too, when Ngwat Mahop pounced on a brilliantly save from Murphy only to see his shot come off the wrong side of the post.
A big night for Bohs and a lot more than pride to play for this day next week.
