Manchester United captain Gary Neville has lost his appeal against a £5,000 FA fine for his celebrations during the Premiership win against Liverpool in January.

United had just scored a dramatic late winner through Rio Ferdinand when Neville celebrated in front of the away fans at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old was subsequently fined and also warned about his future conduct. He then appealed the decision.

The celebrations angered Liverpool fans and Neville was jeered when the two teams met in the FA Cup the following month, with United losing 1-0. The cup fixture was also marred by crowd disturbances.

During Monday's goalless draw against Middlesbrough, Neville confronted an angry fan, although it is understood he will not face any further action over the incident.

At the time of receiving his punishment for his celebration against Liverpool, Neville launched an attack on the FA.

"I believe it is a poor decision," he said at the time. "Not just for me but for all footballers.

"Being a robot, devoid of passion and spirit is obviously the way forward for the modern-day footballer. And I ask the authorities, 'Where is football being taken?"'
