Soccer:Michael O'Neill will wait until after his last match in charge of Shamrock Rovers tomorrow before announcing where he hopes to manage next.
After weeks of speculation, Rovers confirmed today that O’Neill’s three-year spell at the Dublin club will end following their Europa League Group A clash against Tottenham at Tallaght Stadium.
The 42-year-old has been a resounding success since joining from Brechin City, winning back to back League of Ireland titles and lifting the Setanta Sports Cup.
The Northern Irishman’s greatest achievement at the club has been making them the first League of Ireland side ever to qualify for the group stages of a European competition.
Because of that, the former Newcastle midfielder has been strongly linked with the vacant Northern Ireland manager’s position.
O’Neill, who played 33 times for Northern Ireland, has been reportedly offered an interview for the post, but he gave little away today about his future, saying: “I’m looking forward to the game tomorrow. That’s all I’m focusing on.
As for all the other questions about my own future, there is time to deal with that after the game tomorrow.”
O’Neill was thought to be interested in the Hibernian job, but that post was filled by Pat Fenlon, and he has also been linked with Hartlepool.
The Hoops’ debut season in the Europa League has been poor, with the Irish team failing to pick up a point in their opening five matches, but their manager is hoping to end his time in Dublin on a positive note, even though they are massive underdogs against a Tottenham squad blessed with international talent.
“I hope I can go out on a high,” he said.
“We are looking for our first point in the competition. The players have been fantastic here and I hope what I have achieved will be seen as a success.
“It would be fantastic for our supporters if we could take something out of the game tomorrow night and round it off in a nice fashion.”
O’Neill’s side stunned Spurs in the reverse fixture in September, going 1-0 up at White Hart Lane before goals from Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Giovani Dos Santos ended any hopes of an upset.
O‘Neill is hoping that home advantage will help his team go one better this time around, however.
“We have to make it a cup tie tomorrow night,” O’Neill said.
“We will try to make it as uncomfortable as possible for Tottenham.
“We had a great game at White Hart Lane. We took the lead there. We gave them a real fright. It was a fantastic night for the club but we couldn’t hang on and we ultimately succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. We have a chance to rectify that tomorrow night.
“It’s always nice to take the scalp of a big club and they are having a fantastic season in the Premier League. The players have everything to gain tomorrow night.”
Shamrock are facing a Spurs side who have all but given up hope of making it through to the knockout stages.
They need PAOK Salonika, who have already qualified, to beat Rubin Kazan, and the Londoners also have to overturn a five-goal goal difference the Russians hold over them.
Despite that, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has left most of his stars at home. Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Scott Parker will not feature , but O’Neill still
expects a tough test.
“Their priorities lie elsewhere,” O’Neill said.
“But Spurs have such a strong squad that I am sure we will see some big names on the teamsheet tomorrow night. That’s what the supporters have come here to see.
“The players will be looking forward to playing against big players who they see week in week out. Whatever team we face we know it will be a difficult game.”
Conor McCormack and Craig Sives are out of tomorrow’s game with their respective calf and groin injuries.
