Alex Ferguson named an entirely different Manchester United side but still managed to come up with eight internationals for the start of his side’s Carling Cup defence against Wolves at Old Trafford.

Sunday’s derby-day match-winner Michael Owen was handed only his second Red Devils start, while Wes Brown and goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak had plenty of incentive to impress in a side packed with attacking talent.

Federico Macheda, Daniel Welbeck and Nani were all included, while former Old Trafford trainee Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was part of the visitors’ line-up.
