Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Paddy Kenny is being investigated by police in South Yorkshire following complaints he "deliberately taunted" away fans during a Championship game.

Officers are investigating the behaviour of Kenny towards the end of Sheffield United's 3-2 stoppage-time win over Hull following reports it sparked trouble with fans.

The incident allegedly happened at the team's Bramall Lane ground on Saturday as the Blades clinched the win in the race for promotion to the Premiership.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said a number of complaints were received from Hull City fans that the goalkeeper made gestures towards them as his team scored a late goal to win the vital points.

Superintendent Martin Hemingway, head of the Sheffield football, events and licensing unit, said: "A number of complaints have been received and officers are looking into them.

"We need to get a full picture of what is alleged and gather the available evidence.

"There is no doubt that events on the field affect the behaviour of spectators and allegations of deliberate taunting are always taken very seriously."

A force spokeswoman confirmed the referee was made aware of the situation at the end of the game and said it was expected the football authorities would monitor the progress of any inquiry.
