Premiership strugglers Charlton Athletic are hoping to sign former Hearts captain Steven Pressley to help in their fight against relegation.

"There is a good chance he will be at Charlton and it will be a good addition if we can secure him for nothing," manager Alan Pardew told the club's Website today.

Pardew's first game in charge of the London club ended in a 2-2 draw with Fulham. He is the club's third manager this season, following the sackings of Iain Dowie and Les Reed.

Pressley, who has more than 30 caps for Scotland, left Hearts earlier this month following an "amicable agreement". He had been suspended by the Scottish Premier League club after criticising the way it was being run.

"What I like about him is that he is a leader," added Pardew, who was sacked by West Ham United this month.

"I think we have some very good centre halves here but he comes into a pack that needs characters and leadership."

Charlton have 13 points from 20 matches, just two above bottom club Watford who have played a game less. They are seven points behind the safety zone.
