The PFAI has reacted with dismay after Drogheda United's Emergency Committee asked players to reconsider the financial settlement they rejected four days ago.
After failing to secure additional funds in the bid to save the club, the Drogheda United Emergency Committee announced today it had "no option but to again offer the club's players the previous financial settlement" of €90,000 for consideration ahead of a deadline of 5pm tomorrow.
General Secretary of the PFAI Stephen McGuinness spoke with committee representative Dermot McKenna before statement was released this afternoon, but expected the offer to improve and was surprised by the sudden deadline.
"They are giving themselves very little room for manoeuvre. The players are willing to accept what's on the table with further payments over the next six months to a year. And the seven who are still under contract are prepared to have those contracts cancelled," McGuinness told the Irish Times.
"How much do they want? The players are willing to accept a lot less than they are entitled to but the club just seem to want to have their cake and eat it."
Drogheda insist the offer cannot be increased in any way because it would jeopardise the club's future participation in the League of Ireland.
Fans of the club and the people of Drogheda have contributed in the region of €200,000 since a public meeting was held on December 3rd last year.
