Soccer: Anthony Pilkington has replaced James McCarthy in the Republic of Ireland under-21 squad by Anthony Pilkington though manager Don Givens insists the decision to omit McCarthy has nothing to with the player's commitment to Ireland.

McCarthy has been the subject of much debate recently as he qualifies to play for both his native Scotland and Ireland through his Donegal-born grandfather. He has represented Ireland at under-17, under-18 and under-21 level, but the Scottish Football Association  (SFA) were still hopeful he would switch allegiance.

The Hamilton Academicals player insists he has already made up his mind. "I'm really flattered that Scotland were interested in me," he said. "It's a huge compliment but the fact is I'd already made my decision.

"Ireland have been absolutely brilliant to me and my family and I couldn't turn my back on them."

McCarthy's club issued a statement last night on the player's behalf reiterating the player's commitment to Ireland.

Givens in turn welcomed the news and said the issue was never really in doubt. He also hopes the matter can be put to bed so the McCarthy can get on with his football. In the interim Givens believes it's in the best interest of all that McCarthy sits out next Tuesday's game with Lithuania.

"I have decided to withdraw James from the squad because after talking to him I feel that he needs a rest," said Givens. "I am very happy that he has publicly stated his commitment to Ireland and having worked with James I was never under any doubt of that commitment.

"I now hope that James can be left to concentrate on football and that this issue can be put behind us."

The news means Pilkington is in line to get his first cap for Ireland.
