Celtic surrendered their lead at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League to Old Firm rivals Rangers after failing to break down Motherwell at Parkhead.

Rangers’ win at St Johnstone earlier had taken the Ibrox side two points clear but the Hoops failed to respond in an afternoon of frustration in the east end of Glasgow, as they drew 0-0 with the Steelmen.

Niall McGinn headed wide just before the break with the best chance of the first half but that only preceded a catalogue of missed chances in the second period which led to the Hoops fans booing and jeering at the final whistle.

Sasa Papac came to Rangers’ rescue with a late winner against St Johnstone as last season’s champions won 2-1 at McDiarmid Park.

The full-back picked the ideal time to net his first goal of the season when he fired home the decider from 20 yards in the 83rd minute.

Kris Boyd, scoring in the 40th minute, had earlier cancelled out Collin Samuel’s 17th-minute opener.

Aberdeen and Hearts shared the points, drawing 1-1 at Pittodrie. Lee Miller put the home side in front three minutes before the interval, heading home Michael Paton’s cross from close range.

But Hearts levelled through prospective Scotland cap Andrew Driver after 63 minutes, the Oldham-born winger coolly slotting home substitute Christian Nade’s pass.

Hibernian striker Abdessalam Benjelloun scored a late penalty to give the hosts a well-deserved 1-0 win against Kilmarnock at Easter Road.

Just as it looked like the visiting side might emerge with a draw, Gavin Skelton was penalised for tripping the Moroccan inside the area eight minutes from time.

Following a hard-fought first half, Hibs took complete control after the interval but passed up a handful of chances before Benjelloun notched the winner.
