Champions League round-up: Real Madrid scored twice in the first half to defeat a spirited Zenit St Petersburg 2-1 on their home Champions League debut, while Vincenzo Iaquinta scored a first-half double to help Group Hopponents Juventus salvage a 2-2 draw away to Belarus minnows BATE Borisov.

An own goal by Zenit defender Tomas Hubocan and an opportunistic strike by Ruud van Nistlerooy gave nine-times European champions Real their second consecutive victory in Group H.

Portugal international Danny, Zenit's record €30million signing from Dynamo Moscow last month, was on target for the Russian champions midway through the first half but the home side wasted numerous chances after the break.

The Uefa Cup holders, making their Champions League debut this season, are still looking for their first points in the competition after going down 1-0 at Juventus in their opener two weeks ago.

Russian playmaker Arshavin wasted their best chance with less than 10 minutes remaining when his low drive hit the far post.

Arshavin was left to rue missed opportunities. "We have only ourselves to blame," he told Russian television.

"We had so many chances but couldn't put them away while Real made them count. I don't want to put everything down to luck, probably their bigger class made the difference tonight."

Italy forward Iaquinta saved the Serie A side's blushes by nodding in a Sebastian Giovinco cross in the 29th minute and firing through the legs of BATE keeper Sergei Veremko on the stroke of half time.

The hosts had taken control with goals by Sergei Kryvets and Igor Stasevich after 17 and 23 minutes respectively.

Bayern Munich put a nervous first-half display behind them to claim a 1-1 draw at home to Olympique Lyon in Champions League Group F.

Bayern, facing trouble on the domestic front after two successive Bundesliga defeats, gifted Lyon the lead when Martin Demichelis headed a Juninho free kick back past his own goalkeeper in the 25th minute.

After several near misses they got the equaliser they deserved when Ze Roberto arrived late in the penalty area to head home a Miroslav Klose cross shortly after the break.

The other game in Group F saw Fiorentina draw 0-0 at home to Steaua Bucharest.
