Charlton Athletic's hopes of a first FA Cup semi-final appearance for 50 years were frustrated by Middlesbrough in a drab scoreless draw at the Valley.

Middlesbrough must wait three weeks to host the London club in a quarter-final replay, owing to Boro's involvement in the Uefa Cup.

Charlton should have won the game in the first half as they squandered several chances, the best falling to Hermann Hreidarsson whose close-range volley was saved by Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer.

Boro created few chances and did not seriously test Charlton keeper Thomas Myhre. Gaizka Mendieta fired one shot wide while James Morrison's scuffed effort was easily saved.
