The Republic of Ireland are to revisit the scene of one of their most famous victories for the opening Euro 2008 Qualifier against Germany in September.

The German Football Association today announced that the match will take place in the 50,000-seater Gottlieb Daimler Stadium, the scene of Ireland’s memorable 1-0 victory over England at Euro ‘88.

Ray Houghton may not be there to put the ball in the German net but manager Steve Staunton may be hoping that the venue smiles on Irish fortunes again.

Staunton believes that the game will provide an early indication of the challenge that lies ahead.
