Soccer:Shamrock Rovers bowed out of the EA Sports Cup this afternoon but Dublin rivals St Patrick's Athletic required a late equaliser and then extra-time and penalties to see off the league leaders.
Rovers had looked on course for a place in the fourth round thanks to Dean Kelly’s penalty on the hour mark. St Pat’s fought hard to force extra-time and Daniel North finally got the equaliser with two minutes remaining, again from the penalty spot.
Neither side could make the breakthrough in extra-time and it was the Inchicore club who held their nerve in the shootout, winning 3-1 on penalties.
Elsewhere, the nine-time winners Derry City booked their passage with a 2-1 win over Mervue United at the Brandywell.
David McDaid and Michael McCrudden grabbed the goals for the home side before Alex Lee secured a late consolation for the visitors.
In today’s later games, defending champions Sligo Rovers ended Cockhill Celtic’s cup run with a 4-0 win.
The Donegal minnows, who accounted for Galway in the last round, fell behind in the first half when Joseph Ndo fired home. And their fate was sealed after the break as Eoin Doyle, Rafeal Cretaro and Daryl Horgan added to Sligo’s tally.
