Soccer: Shelbourne have expressed their dismay at not being reinstated to the FAI Cup after Sheriff YC were removed from the competition.

Sheriff YC beat Shels 3-2 in the fourth round last month but were today expelled from the Cup after being found guilty of fielding an ineligible player.

However, Sheriff’s quarter-final opponents Limerick City have now been given a bye into last four.

“The FAI domestic committee has removed Sheriff Youth Club from the quarter-finals of the 2011 FAI Ford Senior Cup after ruling they played an ineligible player in their Fourth Round tie against Shelbourne on August 26th,” an association statement read today.

“Limerick FC will now progress to the semi-finals. All parties affected by this decision have the right of appeal and any appeal must be lodged by 1pm tomorrow as per FAI Rule 156C.”

Shels claim they are “aghast” at not being reinstated and are expected to lodge an appeal before the deadline.

A statement from the club this afternoon, read: “Shelbourne FC are in receipt of the decision of the FAI Domestic Committee in relation to the ineligibility of a player in the recent FAI Ford Cup game between ourselves and Sheriff YC.

“We would like to commiserate with our near neighbours and friends, Sheriff YC in the decision to remove them from the competition.

“However , Shelbourne FC is aghast at the decision of the Committee not to reinstate our club to this season’s FAI Ford Cup as a consequence of this and will be making no further comment until the club’s board of management has examined, in conjunction with its Legal Advisors, all available options.”
