Andriy Shevchenko's expected transfer to Chelsea moved a step closer last night when AC Milan gave the striker permission to have talks with the Blues.

The 29-year-old Ukraine international will now visit Stamford Bridge for further discussions on a proposed £34 million switch.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that Andriy Shevchenko has been given permission by AC Milan to travel to London," said a statement on the club's website.

However, they did also warn that no deal has yet been finalised, adding: "An agreement between all parties is still pending."

Since joining the club in 1999, Shevchenko has scored 173 goals for Milan, the second most their history behind Gunnar Nordahl with 221.

However, he last week declared his intention to leave the Serie A giants.

"I am leaving for family reasons," said Shevchenko. "I want to thank the club for everything it's given to me.

"There is no problems regarding my relationship with anyone in the club or any financial problems."
