Sunderland target Alan Smith will 'consider his options' unless he is given assurances over his future with Manchester United.

The former Leeds striker made a good return to first-team action towards the end of last season after severe injury problems, and helped the Old Trafford club to the Premiership title.

That form also saw the 26-year-old recalled to the England fold, but Smith is concerned that he may be restricted to a bit-part role with the champions next season.

And he is adamant that unless manager Alex Ferguson is ready to promise him a starting berth for next term, he will turn his attentions elsewhere.

"If they are going to sell me, I'd like to know. But I won't find out unless I get to speak to the manager," Smith told reporters.

"If you're no longer wanted, then you have to consider your options."

He added: "I want to be out there from the start."

Smith insists the ball is now in Ferguson's court.

He said: "If the manager tells me he wants me, I'm there for him. If he says he doesn't, it's time to move on."

Roy Keane is said to want Smith among his Sunderland ranks ahead of their Premiership campaign.
