Transfer Deadline Day: Tottenham and Portsmouth have agreed a fee for Jermain Defoe, leaving the player to decide whether he wants to move to Fratton Park.

The 25-year-old striker is out of contract at Spurs at the end of next season and has been linked with a move while negotiations have been unresolved.

He has also struggled for regular opportunities under head coach Juande Ramos, with the Spaniard preferring Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov in attack for important matches.

Ramos and Defoe fell out after a training ground incident at the start of the month but have since patched up their relationship, and the striker has talked about signing a new deal.

However, his lack of action has seen him linked with other Barclays Premier League clubs.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp, who worked with Defoe at West Ham, was monitoring the striker's situation in the summer but no deal was agreed.

Litamanen, Hodgson reunite at the Cottage

Fulham have signed Finland striker Jari Litmanen until the end of the season.

The 36-year-old former Liverpool, Barcelona and Ajax striker will renew his relationship with manager Roy Hodgson, who was in charge of the Finland national team during Euro 2008 qualifying.

Hodgson said on Fulham's official website: "I don't think there is a need to explain the qualities that Jari possesses as a player or the obvious reasons for wanting to bring him to Fulham, and I am delighted that he has agreed to join us for the remaining months of the season."

Litmanen was Hodgson's captain during Euro 2008 qualifying and the striker has been his nation's talisman over the past decade, earning 110 caps and scoring 28 international goals.

He started his career with Reipas in Finland's premier division before enjoying great success with Ajax, winning four Dutch titles, three domestic cups and the European Cup.

Litmanen went on to represent Barcelona and Liverpool and returned to Ajax before recent spells with Bundesliga side Hansa Rostock and Swedish outfit Malmo FF.

Hodgson added: "Although he is not entirely match fit at the moment, I have no doubt that he will have a big part to play over the coming months and that we shall benefit as a team from his skill and experience."

Litmanen is joined at Craven Cottage by international team-mate Toni Kallio. The 29-year-old defender joins from Swiss side BSC Young Boys and has made 15 appearances for his country.

Veteran Stubbs joins Derby

Derby have signed Everton defender Alan Stubbs on an 18-month contract, the Rams announced on their website.

No fee is involved for the 36-year-old who has made almost 350 league appearances in England as well as more than 100 in all competitions in Scotland.

Stubbs joins a club marooned at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League and seemingly destined to be relegated after just one season in the top flight.

Manager Paul Jewell believes Stubbs' experience will be invaluable as the Rams aim to bridge a 12-point gap to safety.

Jewell said: "It's a terrific capture for us. Stubbsy is a first-class pro, someone who has been there, seen it and done it.

"I'm delighted to have him on board and he will add experience and steel to the backline. He will train with us on Friday and is very much in contention for a place in the team on Saturday."

Gilberto's Spurs deal falls through

The transfer of Gilberto to Tottenham from Hertha Berlin has collapsed, according to the Bundesliga club.

The player underwent a medical in London on Sunday and both clubs had reached an agreement over a fee.

However the deal has been called off after results of a second medical yesterday "prevented a contract between the player and Tottenham Hotspur from being concluded to the original conditions".

"The Brazilian national team player Gilberto will fulfil his contract until June 2008 with Hertha Berlin," announced the Bundesliga side on their website.
