Steve Staunton has lost two of his squad to injury ahead of the European qualifier with Germany but neither player was likely to start Saturday's important game in Stuttgart.

Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny is struggling with a thigh strain and is replaced by the veteran Nicky Colgan of Barnsley.

Birmingham defender Stephen Kelly also misses out with a calf strain and his place in the squad goes to Preston North End youngster Sean St. Ledger.

Kenny played the full 90 minutes of United's 1-0 loss to Fulham at the weekend but Kelly limped out after 58 minutes of Birmingham's 2-0 defeat away to Cardiff City.

St Ledger's call-up is certainly surprising considering the magnitude of this weekend's game but the 21-year-old defender is a promising prospect who not so long ago was courted by Aston Villa.

Comfortable at both centre-half and right-back, he switched to Preston during the summer having plied his trade with Peterborough last term where he was voted the club's player of the season.

Having seen eight players - four of whom were definite starters - withdraw injured before the recent humiliating friendly defeat to Holland, Staunton will pray the latest injuries are confined to this pair.

The squad begin their match preparations with a training session in Malahide tomorrow and follow that up with another on Thursday morning ahead of the afternoon flight to Stuttgart.

UCD's Gary Dicker and Anthony Stokes of Arsenal - on loan at Falkirk - are drafted in to the Republic of Ireland under-21 squad for Friday's European qualifier against Belgium in Galway.

Manager Don Givens has turned to the pair because of injuries to Darron Gibson (knee) and Jay Tabb (hernia).

Finally, following his impressive displays in the Tri-Nations tournament Erris United striker Ronan Murray returns to Vincent Butler's under-16 squad for a double friendly with Croatia next month.
