Stephanie Roche has been invited to spend the day at the White House by US president Barack Obama for St Patrick's Day this year.

The 25-year-old made the announcement on Twitter on Saturday evening.

Roche became known to the nation and the world when her "wonder goal" made the final three in the Fifa Puskas award for goal of the year alongside Real Madrid star James Rodriguez and Robin Van Persie.

She was pipped for the top spot by Rodriguez but came second with 33 per cent of the vote.
