Republic of Ireland under-21 manager Don Givens has named a strong squad for the European qualifier  against Azerbaijan next month.

Ireland face the Azeris over two legs of a Uefa under-21 European Championship preliminary-round tie on May 11th and 18th.

Bolton right-back Joey O'Brien and Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland, both of whom made their senior debuts in a 3-0 friendly win over Sweden on March 1st, have been included.

Celtic's Aiden McGeady, with three international caps to his name, is also named in a provisional party of 18 for the games in Baku and Kilkenny.

"I hope to field my strongest team for these two games because it is vital we win them," said Givens.

If Ireland do win, they will progress to the group stages against Greece and Belgium, starting in September.
