Grant Leadbitter scored the opener in the 66th minute while the Republic of Ireland's David Connolly secured the points in extra time to the delight of Sunderland's 8,000 travelling fans.
The Black Cats have recorded nine wins in eleven games in the Coca-Cola Championship keeping them in contention for promotion to the Premiership.
